What is Overthinking Syndrome?
When facing difficulties in life and the surrounding environment, young people often feel pressure and tend to overthink, also known as Overthinking Syndrome. So, is there a way to help young people reduce stress, boost their spirits, and escape from the state of overthinking? The talk show "Unravel: Breaking Free from the Ocean of Thoughts," organized by a group of students from the Faculty of Journalism and Communication at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, aims to help young people eliminate stress and address Overthinking Syndrome!
What is Overthinking Syndrome?
During the program, Dr. Tô Nhi A, a psychologist from the University of Economics and Finance in Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that Overthinking Syndrome is an issue that needs attention. This syndrome can occur in both young people and adults, as anyone can fall into the maze of excessive thinking.
Regarding the symptoms of Overthinking Syndrome, Dr. Tô Nhi A explained that it is a problem when someone thinks excessively, far more than the issue actually exists in reality. However, not everything that is "excessive" is a disorder; to determine whether it is a form of anxiety disorder or a mental illness, we need to go through various assessment steps.
Dr. Tô Nhi A also acknowledged that addressing psychological disorders must start from within each individual. In particular, psychological treatment and the use of medication must be strictly controlled.
Focusing on Goals and Passions
Vy Quỳnh Trúc Linh, a social media content creator, commented that clips on social media often exaggerate issues for entertainment without considering the values they bring. Instead of just focusing on how to be perfect, she is more concerned about how to improve herself and align with her goals and passions.
This female Kol admitted that both in the past and now, she has faced different worries, which still occupy her mind. However, her approach to these worries has changed due to her experiences.
In her pursuit of a career on social media, Trúc Linh has encountered mixed comments and evaluations of her viewpoints. She has learned to focus on worthy concerns and correctly assess the essence of issues, rather than fixating on things she cannot control. Trúc Linh also knows how to focus on problem-solving methods to avoid overthinking or getting caught up in repetitive thoughts.
Overcoming Overthinking Syndrome for a Happier Life
“Each of us has different weaknesses and strengths, but Linh believes that overcoming weaknesses and leveraging strengths is a wonderful journey filled with beautiful and valuable moments. Anything that negatively impacts my life, I will just fix it. The journey of addressing those shortcomings is enjoyable and offers many lessons. I gain strong confidence from those moments of self-improvement in both work and life,” -KoL Trúc Linh.
Not Letting Thoughts Spiral Out of Control
As a young person who has experienced and overcome excessive thinking, Thu Nguyên, also a content creator, added: "When faced with overthinking, we should find someone to talk to for advice, or even talk to ourselves by speaking in front of a mirror, recording a video, audio, or writing it down. Any method is fine, as long as we don’t let thoughts spiral out of control but instead find ways to address the issue."
Conclusion
The psychologist emphasized that Overthinking Syndrome can occur in anyone. No matter who you are or what job you do, you may encounter excessive thinking. According to Dr. Tô Nhi A, physical activity is essential and effective for reducing excessive thoughts. We need to measure our personal growth through specific actions like studying at school, learning a new language, engaging in sports, going to bed early before 10 PM, and always "feeling better than yesterday." If the pressure from work is too great, find ways to alleviate it. If you feel weak, be strong to overcome. From there, you will cultivate a positive mindset in facing life's challenges," shared the female psychologist.
